LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Joe Carbone collected three hits Saturday in the Lewis University baseball team's 4-3, 7-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader loss at Bellarmine. Lewis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the seven-inning opener. In the first, Billy Duffy singled with two outs and scored when the Bellarmine center fielder dropped Mike Smith's fly ball. Ryan Reynolds' one-out double in the second was followed by Brian Clancy's sacrifice bunt and Carbone's RBI single. Bellarmine touched Lewis starter Tim Harmatys for two runs (one earned) in the bottom of the second and took a 3-2 edge with another unearned run in the fourth. The Flyers pulled even in the sixth. Smith ignited the rally with a leadoff double, moved to third when Bryan Druktenis grounded out and scored on a two-out error. But Bellarmine tallied what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the inning off Lewis reliever Ryan Duran (0-2), and the Flyers were retired in order in the seventh. Carbone and Duffy each had two hits for the Flyers, who outhit the Knights 7-6. In the nightcap, Lewis (2-11, 2-3 GLVC) plated its only run in the second. Smith singled, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Carbone's single. Bellarmine (6-13, 4-2 GLVC) tied it in the fourth, took command with four runs in the fifth and added two insurance runs in the eighth. |
