Lewis Bats Come To Life Against Lynn

March 6, 2004

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lewis exploded for a pair of five-run innings and beat Lynn 13-9 Friday to even its record at 5-5. The Flyers have won four of the last five games on their annual Florida trip after losing four of the first five.

Lewis grabbed a quick lead with a run in the first. Brandon Niewinski doubled with one out and later scored on a double steal.

Lynn plated five runs in the third off Flyer starter Matt Tanton (1-1), but Lewis retaliated with five runs of their own in the fourth.

Victor Naut led off with a single and scored on Ahren Baranski's home run. With two outs, Dave Tolchin reached on an error, Andy Radak walked and Andy Sweet put the Flyers ahead 6-5 with a three-run homer.

The Knights (6-13) regained the lead by scoring twice in the fifth, only to see the Flyers strike for five more runs in the sixth.

Brian Davis led off by reaching on an error, Phil Marchinski singled and Tolchin's bunt single loaded the bases. Radak's single scored Davis and Marchinski, putting Lewis ahead for good 8-7.

Sweet delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Tolchin. Niewinski walked, then joined Radak in a double steal that put runners at second and third. Chris Carbonaro's ground ball to the shortstop drove in Radak, and Niewinski scored on Naut's double to make it 11-7 Flyers.

Lynn drew closer with single tallies in the sixth and seventh, but Lewis re-established a four-run lead by scoring twice in the eighth without a hit. Naut and Baranski drew consecutive one-out walks; Naut later scored on a wild pitch, while Baranski stole home to conclude the scoring.

Tanton allowed eight runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings, but he struck out six and walked only two. A save went to Matt Rolle, who allowed just two hits and one unearned run in the final 3 1/3 innings. Rolle fanned four and did not walk a batter.

Lewis goes for a three-game sweep of Lynn Saturday at 10 a.m., then concludes its Florida schedule against West Chester at 3:30 p.m.
