March 2, 2004 BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lewis University baseball team rode the pitching of Matt Petrusek and the hitting of Chris Carbonaro to a 4-2 victory over Mercyhurst Tuesday. Petrusek (2-0) struck out seven and allowed just five hits and one walk in eight innings. Dave Tolchin pitched the ninth to record his second save. Lewis (3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Carbonaro walked, advanced to second on Brandon Niewinski's single and scored on Andy Sweet's single. It was the first of three runs Carbonaro would tally. The Flyers scored twice in the fourth. Carbonaro doubled down the left-field line with one out and scored on Niewinski's single. Niewinski scored on Matt Newquist's two-out single. Although Mercyhurst reached Petrusek for two runs in the fifth, things could have been much worse. The Lakers (1-5) put a single, a double and another single together to make it 3-2 Lewis with nobody out. But Petrusek picked off the runner at first for the first out, then retired the side on consecutive ground balls to shortstop Ahren Baranski. The Flyers added an insurance run in the sixth. Carbonaro led off with his second double and scored on Baranski's two-out single. The potential tying runs were at first and second in the Mercyhurst eighth following a walk and an error. Petrusek fanned the next two hitters, however, and the Laker threat died with a fly ball to left. The Flyers play at Nova Southeastern Wednesday at 7 p.m. |
