April 22, 2007 LISLE, Ill. - Lewis University won the women's competition and finished third in the men's standings at the Benedictine University Eagle Track and Field Invitational. The Flyer women scored 161.5 points, topping runner-up Monmouth by 17 points. The Flyer men tallied 82 points, trailing second-place Loyola Chicago by only four points. Scott Barnas provided the Flyers' top highlight. Barnas' toss of 52-9½ (third place) in the shot put broke Lewis' longest-standing men's outdoor school record - a mark of 52-0 set by Jim Scott in 1990 - and also placed the Flyer freshman on the provisional qualifiers' list for the NCAA Division II Championship. Adrian Myers won the men's 800 meters in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:51.40, while Sarah King set a school record of 10-11¾ (third place) in the pole vault. Event winners for the Lewis women were Juliann Szablewski in the 10,000 meters (40:59.85), Millennium Wheeler in the triple jump (36-2), Alicia Wiese in the shot put (41-1¾) and the 4x100-meter relay team (:48.54). Runner-up efforts were turned in by Angelique McNeal in the 100 meters (:12.44), Kelle Lederman in the 800 meters (2:21.56), Terran Wertz in the 1,500 meters (4:46.30), Theresa Dexl in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:05.37) and the 4x400-meter relay team (4:05.88). Ashley Butler placed third in the long jump (17-8) and tied for third in the 100 meters (:12.49). Other third-place finishes were provided by Wiese in the hammer throw (140-5), Michelle Ruff in the 200 meters (:25.28) and Becky Herbert in the 5,000 meters (19:02.97). Wiese added a fourth-place effort in the discus throw (130-9), while Wheeler (long jump, 17-6), Kristin Johnson (800 meters, 2:24.36) and Erin Mitchell (pole vault, 10-6) also finished fourth. Also scoring for the Lewis women were Ruff in the 100 meters (fifth, :12.55), Angela Whalen in the 800 meters (fifth, 2:24.51), Christine Kustra in the triple jump (fifth, 33-8), Amanda Lewis in the 400 meters (sixth, 1:02.24), Renee Koziol in the 1,500 meters (sixth, 5:00.22), Cassidy Domagalla in the hammer throw (sixth, 130-4), King in the 100 meters (seventh, :12.66) and Rachel Quintana in the hammer throw (eighth, 126-7). Joining Myers on the men's winner's stand were Larry Anzalone in the 1,500 meters (4:01.03) and James Knaperek in the 110-meter hurdles (:15.40). Other top-five finishes came from Mike Eck in the 400 meters (third, :49.68), the 4x100-meter relay team (third, :43.04), Alberto Villa in the 1,500 meters (fourth, 4:06.33) and Randy Hinton in the 200 meters (fifth, :21.90). Also scoring for the Lewis men were Brian Pedersen in the 400 meters (sixth, :51.18), Mark Martinez in the 1,500 meters (sixth, 4:09.00), Kevin Dockemeyer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (sixth, 10:39.62), Brian Finch in the pole vault (tied for sixth, 14-6) and 110-meter hurdles (seventh, :16.45), the 4x400-meter relay team (seventh, 3:36.45), Knaperek in the 400-meter hurdles (eighth, :59.53), Barnas in the hammer throw (eighth, 137-2), Eck in the 1,500 meters (eighth, 4:11.66) and Donnie Lesnick in the 200 meters (eighth, :22.12). |
