Men Second, Women Third At Chicagoland Track & Field Championships

NAPERVILLE - Lewis University finished second in the men's standings and third in the women's competition at the Chicagoland Outdoor Track and Field Championships at North Central College.

The Flyer men scored 160 points, 11 points behind champion North Central. The Flyer women tallied 124 points and trailed champion DePaul (169) and runner-up Carthage (126).

Pole-vaulters Duane Chappell and Mark Zilch posted provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II Championship. Both vaulters cleared 16-8¾, with Chappell winning the event on fewer misses.

Joining Chappell in the winner's circle were Marquise Brown in the long jump (23-5¼) and the 400-meter relay team of Chappell, Terre Mastrino, Tim Rand and Geoff Rozovics (41.85).

Lewis received runner-up efforts from Brown in the triple jump (48-1¾), Chappell in the 200 meters (21.80), Billy Stadele in the 110-meter hurdles (14.99), Tim Rand in the 100 meters (11.03), Mike Eck in the 800 meters (1:54.56), Andy Tremble in the 5000 meters (15:08.21) and the 1600-meter relay team (3:18.09).

Also scoring for the Flyer men were Mastrino, third in the 200 meters (21.83) and 400 meters (49.23); Stadele, third in the javelin (156-4); Chappell, third in the 100 meters (11.12); Adrian Myers, third in the 800 meters (1:55.50); Brian Pedersen, fourth in the 400 meters (49.44) and eighth in the 200 meters (22.47); Jason Klein, fourth in the shot put (49-2¼); Tim Rand, fourth in the 200 meters (21.83); John Kern, fourth in the javelin (155-11) and tied for fifth in the high jump (5-10); Brian Finch, fifth in the decathlon (4971); Rozovics, sixth in the 200 meters (22.22) and seventh in the 100 meters (11.39); Prince Ntim, eighth in the long jump (21-3½); Brown, eighth in the javelin (144-4); and J'ean Middleton, eighth in the 400 meters (50.38).

The women's 400-meter relay team of Ayanna Collins, Ashuanta McCormick, Katie Clare Conway and Jasmine Williams won the event and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships with a 47.64 clocking. Kaydie King won the heptathlon with 4,130 points.

Jenifer Schmidgall finished second in the heptathlon (4,109) and 100-meter hurdles (15.63) and qualified provisionally for the national meet in the long jump (19-0) during the heptathlon competition. Other runners-up were Jonda Cherry in the triple jump (35-2½), Conway in the 400 meters (57.13) and McCormick in the 200 meters (25.39).

Tracey Murnane placed third and qualified provisionally in the 10,000 meters (37:18.01).

Also scoring for the Flyer women were Frances Oprondek, third in the hammer (144-7) and discus (124-1) and sixth in the shot put (38-0¼); McCormick, third in the 100 meters (12.46); Conway, third in the 200 meters (25.40); the 1600-meter relay team, third (4:07.35); Lindsay Main, fourth in the hammer (143-7); King, fourth in the javelin (110-4); Juliann Szablewski, fifth in the 5000 meters (19:13.66); Cathea Pitts, fifth in the 100 meters (12.74); Brianne Appel, seventh in the long jump (16-8) and eighth in the triple jump (33-1¾); Collins, seventh in the 100 meters (12.77); Traci Hoglund, eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (14:29.1); and Williams, eighth in the 100 meters (12.77).
