Lewis Swimming Earns National Academic Honors

July 1, 2009

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The academic honors continue to pour in for the Lewis University swimming program. On Wednesday the Flyers earned both team and individual academic honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for the 2009 Spring semester.

The men's and women's teams earned Team Scholar All-American accolades for posting a combined grade point average above 3.00. The women totaled a 3.11 GPA while the men, who finished 22nd at the National Championships, had a 3.02 mark.

Three Flyers earned CSCAA Individual Scholar All-American Honorable Mention awards. Junior Ryan Harrison (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) totaled a 4.00 in the classroom while recording an NCAA B time in the 200 backstroke in the pool. Teammate senior Greg Marx (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) also had a perfect 4.00. His season was highlighted by B times in the 200 and 500 freestyle. On the women's side, sophomore Allie Henges (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marion) posted a 3.80 and NCAA B times in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly.

"Our swimmers continue to improve our national recognition in the NCAA Division II with outstanding performances in the pool and the classroom," head coach Steve Thompson said. "I am proud of our accomplishments this past year, and I appreciate the contributions these swimmers have made to our success."

Earlier in the year 10 Flyers took home Delahanty Awards, Lewis' honor for academic excellence among student athletes. Also, a program-high 12 swimmers earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Swimming All-Academic Team honors.

"We have outstanding professors who personally invest in the students at Lewis, and our athletic department has provided us with a tremendous resource in Courtney Davis, the academic counselor for athletes," Thompson added.

A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. For more information please visit www.lewisu.edu.
