Flyers Set Two School Records During Day Three Of GLIACs

Feb. 17, 2006

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Two school records and two NCAA Division II qualifying times served as highlights for the Lewis swimmers in day three of competition in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Championships at Northern Michigan University.

Junior Michael Lapustin provided Lewis' best individual finish with a second-place showing in the finals for the 100 backstroke, but his preliminary time of 50.68 established a new Flyer record and earned him a NCAA "A" cut.

Junior Steve O'Leary finished fourth in the 400 IM, setting a Lewis record with his time of 4:14.68, and sophomore Stephanie White-Olson swam a NCAA "B" time of 1:07.76 in the women's 100 breaststroke, finishing fourth in the race.

The men's team also received points from freshmen Greg Marx and Tim Farmer, who finished 11th and 12th in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:47.54 and 1:48.30, respectively.

Freshman Mary Jung, junior Tristine Schmidt and senior Jenny Byers all scored for the women's team in their individual events. Jung (1:58.59) finished seventh in the 200 freestyle, Byers (4:48.77) claimed 10th in the 400 IM and Schmidt (1:03.22) posted an 11th place in the 100 backstroke.

The men's and women's 800 freestyle relay teams each took fourth in their respective races, adding another 30 points to each team's total.

Entering day four, the men sit in sixth place with 220 points, while the women are in seventh with 175 points. The Wayne State University men's and women's teams both lead overall with 543 and 528 points, respectively.

The Flyers hit the pool again on Saturday for the fourth and final day of GLIAC Championship action. Lapustin, who has been shutout from a title so far with two second-place finishes, has one last chance in the 200 backstroke.
