Dec. 1, 2007 KENOSHA, Wis. - The Lewis University swim team recorded five victories and a school record at the 2007 TYR/CollegeSwimming.com Classic. The two-day meet held at Carthage College featured nine schools. Saint Cloud State swept both the women's and men's competitions with 1,650 and 1,131.5 points respectively. Lewis women finished in fifth with 704 points and the men came in sixth with 652.5 points. Freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik recorded two dominating victories in the 200 yard backstroke and 500 yard freestyle. She won the 200 yard backstroke by almost three seconds, posting an NCAA B time of 2:07.47. Freshman Kayla Muir finished fifth in the same event (2:15.56). Muir also finished sixth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.29). Mikolajcik also controlled the 500 yard freestyle, winning the event with an NCAA B time of 5:11.84, almost six seconds better than the second place finisher. Sophomore Jared Zimmer won the 500 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 4:36.76 for an NCAA B time. Just behind Zimmer was senior Adam Brown with a time of 4:36.91 to finish in second place and an NCAA B cut. Zimmer and Brown had a solid performance in the 1650 yard freestyle with Zimmer getting another victory and an NCAA A time of 15:53.66 and Brown notching a fourth place finish of 16:30.45. Brown won the 200 yard butterfly, recording a time of 1:54.65. In the men's 200 yard breaststroke freshman Arty Czarobski delivered a third place performance, stopping the clock at 2:13.81. His 2:11.62 performance in the preliminaries set a new school record, breaking Steve O'Leary's 2:11.87 time on Feb. 18, 2006. Sophomore Bridget Bettenhausen finished just four-tenths of a second behind the winner of the 200 yard breaststroke to record a second-place finish of 2:30.82. She posted another solid performance in the 100 yard breaststroke, coming in second with a time of 1:10.08, just sixth-hundredths of a second behind the first-place finisher. Bettenhausen also grabbed the fifth spot in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.66. The Flyers finished third in the 400 medley relay with Mikolajcik, Bettenhausen, freshman Allie Henges and sophomore Carrie Borgstede finishing with a time of 4:09.05. Lewis' team of Henges, sophomore Nicole Marano, freshman Stephanie Halcomb and Borgstede also posted a third place finish in the women's 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.00 In other performances Marano's 25.05 in the 50 yard freestyle as a fifth place finish. Borgstede came in sixth (55.03) and Henges finished in seventh (55.08) in the 100 yard freestyle. Sophomore Ryan Harrison finished seventh in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.20 in the preliminaries and 1:59.32 in the finals. Freshman Tom Fitzgerald took sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:00.96). The Flyers don't return to the pool till after the New Year on Jan. 4 and 5 at the Indianapolis Invitational. |
