Orla Power Sets School Records In 1650 Freestyle Win

CHICAGO - Freshman Orla Power (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) set the school record in the 1650 and 1000 in a 1650 freestyle victory during the first day of the Phoenix Fall Classic on Friday evening at the University of Chicago.

Power finished the 1650 freestyle in 17:35.82, an NCAA B cut time and less than three seconds off an A cut. Power won the race by more than seven seconds. She finished the first 1000 in 10:36.01 to set the 1000 school record. Both the 1650 and 1000 records were previously held by Molly Ward.

Freshman Jamie Gunn (Fenton, Mo./John F. Kennedy Catholic) scored points with a 10th place finish in 11:14.00. Junior Genny Aamoth (Moorpark, Calif./La Reina) was 12th (19:29.58) and junior Carrie Borgstede (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) was 13th (19.40.40).

Junior Kevin Coates (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) and freshman Brandon Drogemuller (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) were first and second in the 1650 freestyle with NCAA A cuts. Coates finished in 15:46.84, with Drogemuller touching the wall in 15:51.57. Senior Aaron Olszeski (Houston, Texas/Friendswood) was sixth (16:59.60) and junior Arty Czarobski (Lansing, Ill./Thorton Fractional South) was seventh (17:11.25).

Lewis' women finished second in the 200 and 400 medley. Junior Stephanie Halcomb (Springfield, Mo./Ozark) had the best leg of the 400, finishing in 53.15.

"It's a good meet for us to measure where we are in the season," head coach Steve Thompson said. "Obviously Orla getting those B cuts and school records puts us on par with our goals for the year."

Through one day the Lewis men lead with 124 points. University of Chicago is behind Lewis with 111 points. UIC is third with 88 points. The Lewis women are second with 104 points. University of Chicago leads with 154 points.

The second day of the Phoenix Fall Classic is on Saturday.
