ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Lewis University swimming teams faced some tough competition Saturday at the St. Cloud State University Invitational, and several swimmers scored well for the Flyers. Both Lewis teams finished fourth against NCAA Division I program Wisconsin-Green Bay; North Dakota, which finished third in the men's standings and fifth in women's competition at last year's NCAA Division II Championships; and St. Cloud State, whose women placed 12th nationally in Division II a year ago. For the Flyer men, Jevgenijs Pesins won the 100 butterfly (:53.92) and placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:49.30), 200 butterfly (2:01.72) and 200 individual medley (2:04.87). Pesins was a member of Lewis' second-place 400 medley relay team (3:41.43) that also featured Michael Lapustin, Steve O'Leary and Jeff Martin. Lapustin turned in runner-up efforts in the 100 backstroke (:53.79), 200 backstroke (1:56.41) and 50 freestyle (:22.53) and was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.63). Adam Brown placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:52.00) and 200 butterfly (2:01.33), third in the 400 individual medley (4:26.34) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (:56.20). O'Leary finished second in the 400 individual medley (4:25.08), third in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.92) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:05.62). Tim Farmer was seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:51.76) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:01.47) and 100 butterfly (:56.64), while Greg Marx finished eighth in the 100 freestyle (:50.71) and 200 freestyle (1:51.87). The Flyer women were paced by Mary Jung, who tied for third in the 100 freestyle (:56.38), placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.67) and 200 freestyle (2:01.83), and finished sixth in the 50 freestyle (:26.17). Stephanie White-Olson was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.21) and eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.36), and Michelle Sliva finished seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:03.36). "Although we had some pretty good individual performances, I'm a little disappointed because I think we as a team took a step backward from the progress we made in our first couple of meets," head coach Steve Thompson said. "Hopefully we can get back on track this Friday at Grand Valley State. "I think Brown, Farmer and Marx had a good meet," Thompson added. "They train together, and it's evident they are pushing each other to excel and stay motivated. "It was a long trip up there and I'm sure we were tired, but we have to get used to traveling and being at the pool the entire day," Thompson concluded. "We'll face the same situation when we go to Northern Michigan for the conference championships, and we'll have to be ready." |
