KENOSHA, Wis. - The Lewis University swimming team recorded four NCAA B Times in a dual meet with IIT and Carthage on Saturday afternoon. The Lewis women defeated Illinois Institute of Technology 147 to 20 and the men won 145 to 50. The Flyers fell to Carthage by identical scores of 106 to 98. Freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik recorded two NCAA B times with victories in the 200 freestyle (1:55.18) and the 200 backstroke (2:08.35). Freshman Allie Henges finished right behind Mikolajcik in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.15. Freshman Kayla Muir followed Mikolajcik in the 200 backstroke with a second place time of 2:14.88. "Overall, I was extremely pleased with our swimmers. It was an exciting meet for both the men and women. We had several dominating performances, but we also had too many close losses," Lewis head swimming coach Steve Thompson said. "The score changed several times during the meet, and we had a chance to win it going into the final relay." "Carthage is a top twenty Division III team, and we are very similar programs," Thompson said. "They deserve the credit for racing our kids strong to the finish." The Lewis men excelled in the 1000 freestyle, taking the top two spots with NCAA B times. Freshman Kevin Coates won the event with a time of 9:36.14. Senior Adam Brown finished second, stopping the clock at 9:39.46. The men dominated the 200 freestyle with sophomore Jared Zimmer finishing first (1:44.87), sophomore Adam Olszeski taking second (1:47.21) and sophomore Jason Ament coming in third (1:47.42). Zimmer won the 500 freestyle with a performance of 4:43.60. Brown came followed with a time of 4:48.40. Brown followed his two second place finishes with a first place performance of 1:57.33 in the 200 fly. Freshman Allan Sliva finished second in the 50 freestyle (22.54). Freshman Evan Childers finished third (22.63). The Lewis women found success in the 50 freestyle as well. Sophomore Nicole Marano won the event (25.30) with freshman Carrie Borgstede taking third (25.70) and freshman Stephanie Halcomb finishing fourth (25.70). Adam Olszeski came in second in the 200 backstroke (1:55.79) with teammate sophomore Ryan Harrison following him in third (1:56.08). Flyers took three of the top four spots in the 200 breaststroke with freshman Arty Czarobski taking second (2:13.47), freshman Tom Fitzgerald finishing in third (2:14.23) and Aaron Olszeski taking fourth (2:17.99). Lewis had a strong showing in the women's 400 individual medley. Freshman Ruth Bass finished won the event (4:48.18) and Sophomore Bridget Bettenhausen took second (4:52.76). Bettenhausen won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.56. Junior Tracey Kueltzo finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:21.26. Following her was freshman Sarah Griffith in third (2:22.11). Lewis swimmers took three of the top four spots in the women's 500 freestyle. Bass came in second (5:29.21), Kueltzo finished third ( 5:38.47) and freshman Genny Aamoth followed (5:40.63). Bass took second in the 1000 freestyle, registering a time of 11:12.43. Aamoth followed her in third, stopping the clock at 11:35.23. Aaron Olszeski also took fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:19.75). Coates took second (4:15.36). Mikolajcik, Bettenhausen, Henges, and Borgstede finished second in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 4:07.81. The Flyers took second and third in the men's 400 medley. The team of Adam Olszeski, Fitzgerald, Sliva, and Childers took second (3:39.55). Taking third was sophomore Ryan Harrison, Czarobski, Luke Pavlakovich and junior Greg Marx (3:41.56). The women's team of Henges, Halcomb, Marano and Borgstede posted a time of 1:40.86 for second in the 200 yard freestyle medley, missing the top spot by less than a second. The men's team of Ament, sophomore Aidan Murphy, Marx and Zimmer finished third in the 200 yard freestyle medley with a time of 1:30.53, within a second of second place. Next week, the Flyers travel to the University of Minnesota for the USA Swimming/Toyota Grand Prix Meet.
