Coates Leads Flyers At West Virginia

West Virginia Results

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Lewis freshman Kevin Coates recorded two victories including an NCAA B time in a meet at Division I West Virginia on Saturday.

The Flyers' men were just nine points behind the defending Big East Champions (61-70) after 14 events and 14 points behind (96-110) as late as the 24th event. The Mountaineers pulled away late for a 160-109 win after earning 18 diving points. The women's final was 160-89, in favor of West Virginia.

In the men's 1000 yard freestyle Lewis had three swimmers finish in the top four. Coates won the event with an NCAA B time of 9:39.02. Sophomore Jared Zimmer came in third (9:51.85) and senior Adam Brown finished fourth (9:55.77).

The Flyers dominated the 500 yard freestyle, sweeping the top three. Coates took another first, stopping the timer at 4:44.16. Zimmer finished second (4:51.14) and Brown followed him (4:51.45).

Brown also finished third in the 200 yard butterfly (2:00.92).

Sophomore Adam Olszeski was second (54.21) in the 100 yard backstroke and just four tenths of a second behind the first place finisher. Sophomore Ryan Harrison finished third (57.03).

The men also took three of the top four spots in the 100 yard breaststroke. Freshman Tom Fitzgerald came in second (1:02.21), freshman Arty Czarobski (1:03.20) took third and freshman Luke Pavlakovich was just behind in fourth (1:03.34).

Lewis also posted solid times in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Evan Childers finished second (50.32) with sophomore Aidan Murphy in third (51.53) and junior Greg Marx close behind in fifth (51.93).

The men's success continued in the 200 yard freestyle, taking three of the top four spots. Sophomore Jason Ament led the Flyers, finishing second with a time of 1:48.02. Close behind were fellow sophomores Aaron Olszeski (1:49.29) and Zimmer (1:49.77).

Childers won the men's 50 yard freestyle (22.86).

For the women, freshmen Allie Henges and Carrie Borgstede had solid showings in the 200 yard freestyle. Henges finished second (1:57.68) and Borgstede came in fourth (2:02.68).

Henges also posted a solid 1:01.42 in the 100 yard butterfly.

Freshmen Deirdre Mikolajcik and Kayla Muir had strong performances in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. Mikolajcik finished second in both races with times of 1:02.15 and 2:11.06 respectively. Muir was third in the 100 (1:03.86) and second in the 200 (2:17.10).

The Flyers' success continued in the relays. In the women's 200 yard medley relay the Flyers' team of Muir, sophomore Bridget Bettenhausen, Henges and sophomore Nicole Marano finished second (1:55.49).

Henges, sophomore Stephanie Halcomb, Marano and Borgstede posted a time of 1:42.12 in the 200 yard freestyle.

In the men's 200 yard freestyle Ament, Marx, Murphy and Childers finished with a time of 1:31.95.

In the men's 200 yard medley relay Harrison, Fitzgerald, Pavlakovich and Childers finished second with a time of 1:41.63.

The Flyers will return to the pool November 3 at Carthage.
