ASHLAND, Ohio - The Lewis University swimming team claimed its first individual conference championship, set another school record and secured three NCAA "B" times in the second day of competition at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on the campus of Ashland University.

Senior Michael Lapustin took the Flyers' first individual conference championship of the meet, swimming to first in the 200 IM. Lapustin swam the race in 1:54.10, a pool record, and he was one of five Flyers to score points in the race.

Freshman Adam Olszeski finished eight (2:00.86), senior Jevgenijs Pesins was 10th (1:57.53), senior Steve O'Leary took 14th (1:59.24) and freshman Aidan Murphy came in 16th (2:00.44).

Junior Adam Brown set a Lewis record, breaking a mark he set back in December, with a second-place swim the 500 freestyle (4:37.26). Freshman Jared Zimmer, who the day before finished second ahead of Brown in the 1650 freestyle, came in third with a 4:41.54. Both times were good enough for the NCAA "B" qualifying standards.

Freshman Jason Ament also scored for Lewis in the 500 freestyle, swimming a 4:45.54 for sixth place. Sophomore Greg Marx was Lewis' other scorer of the day by swimming to 12th place in the 50 freestyle (22.20).

On the women's side, junior Stephanie White Olson and freshman Bridget Bettenhausen added points to Lewis' total with a 10th and 14th place showing in the 200 IM. Senior Leigh Dodd scored an 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:17.85) and freshman Nicole Marano turned in a point-scoring, 15th-place effort in the 50 freestyle (25.62).

In relay action, the men finished sixth (1:28.79) and the women eighth (1:44.35) in the 200 freestyle, and the women tied for third (4:01.87) while the men finished fifth (3:31.42) in their respective 400 medley races.

The men enter day three with 206 total points, just 12 points behind second place. The women sit sixth with 107.5 points.

The GLIAC Championships run through Saturday.
