MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Flyers set three school records and established four NCAA Division II "B" qualifying times in the final day of competition Saturday at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Northern Michigan University. Junior Michael Lapustin's second-place effort in the 200 backstroke was the Flyers best individual finish of the day. He swam the event in 1:52.63, setting a school record and meeting the NCAA "B" cut. Two more "B" cuts were made in the men's 200 butterfly, as both junior Jevgenijs Pesins (1:54.67) and sophomore Adam Brown (1:54.85) swam school-record pace in finishing third and fourth. Lewis' third school-record swim of the day came from junior Steve O'Leary, who completed the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.87 for eighth place. Sophomore Stephanie White-Olson grabbed the Flyers' fourth NCAA "B" cut with a fourth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. White-Olson finished in 2:25.85, while senior Jenny Byers, who also swam the event, finished in 12th with a time of 2:35.85. The Flyer women received points in the 200 butterfly from juniors Michelle Sliva (2:13.73) and Tristine Schmidt (2:20.59) and freshman Tracey Kueltzo (2:21.60). Freshman Mary Jung scored six points in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.33, and sophomore Jackie Olivare finished 16th in the 1650 freestyle (19:50.79). In 400 freestyle relay action, the men earned a fifth-place finish while the women took eighth. The Lewis men finished the championships in sixth place with 307 points. The women earned seventh place with 242 points. Wayne State University won both the men's and women's overall title with 773 and 710 points, respectively. |
